JODHPUR — A wave of grief and outrage has gripped the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur, after a junior resident doctor died while on active duty, triggering an immediate and indefinite strike by the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA). The protest has brought routine services, including Outpatient Departments (OPD) and elective operation theatres, to a grinding halt.
The crisis erupted following the untimely death of Dr. Rajnaresh Yadav, a Junior Resident in the Department of Anaesthesiology, who died on September 22 while serving his shift in the hospital. Describing the incident as an indictment of the punishing working conditions inside premier medical institutions, the RDA formally submitted a four-point ultimatum to the administration, calling for institutional accountability, sweeping welfare reforms, and the resignation of top leadership.
The Demands: Accountability, Resignation, and Redressal
In a strongly worded representation addressed to the Director of AIIMS Jodhpur, the RDA emphasized that the death cannot be treated as an isolated tragedy, but rather as the fatal outcome of unchecked workloads, toxic duty hours, and a systemic absence of resident welfare safeguards.
The association placed four non-negotiable demands before the institute’s administration:
* Unconditional Public Apology & Transparency: The RDA has demanded a formal public acknowledgement and apology from the institute administration regarding the incident, accompanied by complete transparency about the circumstances surrounding the death and concrete steps being taken to prevent any recurrence.
* ₹5 Crore Financial Compensation: Citing the sudden loss of a young breadwinner and medical professional, the association called for appropriate financial compensation of ₹5 crore for Dr. Yadav’s bereaved family, alongside full institutional support for clearing all dues, insurance claims, and applicable entitlements.
* Resignation of the Executive Director: Holding the highest level of leadership directly accountable for institutional failures, the RDA demanded immediate administrative accountability and the resignation of the Executive Director.
* Official Recognition of the RDA and Student Union: The association pressed for formal institutional recognition of both the Resident Doctors’ Association and the associated Student Union to guarantee an institutional mechanism for regular communication, grievance redressal, and oversight.
Nationwide Shockwaves and Escalating Solidarity
The tragic incident has sent tremors across India, sparking deep outrage throughout the healthcare fraternity. Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) from across the country have united to express staunch solidarity with RDA AIIMS Jodhpur, warning that institutional negligence and inhumane working conditions are pushing frontline healthcare workers to the edge nationwide.
Announcing an immediate cessation of non-emergency work, the RDA stated that residents and students will remain on an indefinite strike until time-bound, satisfactory action is taken. While elective surgical procedures and routine OPD consultations have been shut down, emergency OPD services and emergency operation theatres remain functional to prevent loss of critical patient lives.
Copies of the memorandum have been escalated to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, the National Medical Commission (NMC), the President of AIIMS Jodhpur, the Medical Superintendent, and Heads of Departments across the institution.
