New CJ Takes Over: Justice at High Altitude Set to Get Closer to Ladakh
LEH/SRINAGAR: Dr Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati today took over as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, opening a new chapter for the administration of justice across the Union Territory, particularly in the remote and geographically challenging region of Ladakh.
The oath of office was administered to Dr Justice Bhati, with congratulations and best wishes extended to him for his tenure ahead.
For Ladakh, the new Chief Justice assumes office with the larger question of judicial accessibility gaining importance. At dizzying heights and across vast distances, access to justice can itself become a challenge for litigants from Leh, Kargil and other far-flung areas.
A stronger judicial presence in Ladakh could bring the High Court closer to the people. Regular sittings, a circuit bench or expanded judicial outreach could substantially reduce the time, cost and logistical difficulties faced by litigants who otherwise have to travel long distances for hearings.
The possibility of taking the High Court closer to Ladakh would be particularly significant in a region where geography remains a formidable barrier. Justice delivered nearer to the people would make the constitutional promise of equal access to justice more tangible for citizens living in some of the country's highest inhabited landscapes.
The tenure of the new Chief Justice will therefore be watched not only from the perspective of judicial administration, but also for how effectively the High Court expands its reach into Ladakh.
