NGT slaps notice on Himachal Pradesh, Haryana over Sirsa river pollution
CHANDIGARH/SHIMLA: The National Green Tribunal’s Principal Bench has taken cognisance of allegations of pollution in the Sirsa river and its downstream impact on the Sutlej in Ropar, raising questions over compliance with environmental norms in the affected areas.
The tribunal has issued notices to the concerned authorities in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, seeking their response on the allegations and the steps being taken to prevent pollution of the river and its downstream water systems.
The case assumes significance as the Sirsa river flows through an industrial belt of Himachal Pradesh before entering Punjab, with concerns over the quality of water reaching downstream areas.
The NGT’s intervention puts the spotlight on the responsibility of both states to ensure that industrial and other discharges do not compromise river water quality or create downstream environmental risks.
The tribunal observed that the matter raises a substantial issue relating to compliance with environmental norms and has sought responses from the concerned authorities.
