Shimla, July 18, 2025:
The Himachal Pradesh High Court today bid an emotional farewell to Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan on his elevation as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
Born in Rohru on January 9, 1964, Justice Chauhan is an alumnus of Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, where he served as School Captain, and went on to complete his law degree from Panjab University.
Enrolled as an advocate in 1989, he practiced across all branches of law and served as legal advisor to major state bodies before being elevated as a High Court Judge in 2014.
Fondly known for his humility, efficiency, and unwavering commitment to justice, Justice Chauhan served as Acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court twice.
With a staggering disposal of 75,000 cases during his tenure, he earned the title of the "arrears cruncher" of the Court.
His contributions include landmark environmental rulings, legal aid initiatives, and transformative digital reforms in court functioning.
As Chairperson of the Juvenile Justice Committee and Executive Chairman of the State Legal Services Authority, he worked extensively for the welfare of children, the elderly, and marginalized communities.
He was also part of several national and international judicial conferences, representing India in Romania in 2019 for a global child welfare dialogue.
Speaking at the farewell, Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia praised Justice Chauhan as “a model of discipline and humility,” highlighting his simplicity and deep legal acumen.
Judges, senior advocates, and court officials attended the ceremony, which included a Guard of Honour and red carpet tribute.
Justice Chauhan’s legacy in the Himachal judiciary will be remembered for his integrity, humane approach, and visionary reforms.
