In the apple orchards of Himachal Pradesh, plumes of smoke enveloped the Shimla-Kullu-Mandi  apple belt, creating a major problem of air pollution due to burning of apple  plants pruned twigs in winter months. But here is a promising solution to tackle the burning of apple plant residues after pruning.

The answer lies in shredding the pruned twigs into half-inch pieces, creating a versatile material that can be repurposed for various beneficial applications.

Local entrepreneurs have already seized this opportunity, establishing a company that specializes in shredding apple plant residues.

The shredded material proves to be a valuable resource, finding applications in orchards as mulch, pathways, roads, lawns, and even as an anti-skidding agent on winter roads.

The latter is particularly significant, addressing the issues caused by traditional methods employed by the Public Works Department (PWD) that often lead to slippery surfaces and dust pollution.

This innovative approach is not only environmentally friendly but also presents a lucrative business avenue for the youth.

The mobile nature of the shredding equipment allows it to be easily transported from one location to another, catering to the specific needs of different regions.

Local residents can engage in this enterprise by renting the equipment or through the involvement of panchayats, fostering economic growth and sustainability within the community.

In the realm of real estate and construction, the use of shredded materials for walking paths has long been adopted to prevent water potholes and enhance aesthetic appeal.

The potential earnings from providing such "Cheetee" are significant, presenting a win-win scenario for both entrepreneurs and the environment.

However, amidst these promising developments, challenges persist in the administrative subdivisions of Kotkhai and Jubbal.

Observations over the past two years reveal a range of issues, including the presence of cattle on roads, a surge in Chitta cases, and an escalating menace from dogs and wild animals, exemplified by a recent panther sighting in Chamaru.

Forest encroachments persist, with old cases awaiting resolution, while road-side drainages are clogged with mud and debris.

In terms of governance, mismanagement regarding construction norms along roadsides is rampant, with new markets and workshops encroaching upon valley sides in defiance of judgments from the Honorable High Court.

The lack of roadside rain shelters for the public and unregulated vehicle speeds further contribute to the challenges faced by the region.

The need for public awareness and honesty is evident, and the Himachal Pradesh government's scientific institutions and universities could play a pivotal role in providing solutions.

While there is a wealth of knowledge available, bridging the gap between scientific research and on-the-ground implementation remains a challenge, often attributed to bureaucratic hesitance or ego.

Social media influencers, such as Mrs. Shakuntla Dod from Nandpur, have been actively raising awareness about environmental issues, particularly the detrimental effects of burning stubbles or 'Cheetae'.

Implementing a more direct approach, such as loudspeaker commentaries in jeeps, could serve as an effective means to disseminate information and discourage harmful practices among the public.

In conclusion, the transformation of pruned apple twigs into valuable resources presents a novel opportunity for sustainable development in Himachal Pradesh.

It is essential for both the government and the community to work collaboratively to address the broader environmental and administrative challenges, ensuring a harmonious balance between progress and preservation.
