Toy Library ‘Khilonewala’ Opens in Shimla, Offers Creative Alternative to Screen-Time for Children
Shimla, April 12
In a refreshing break from the growing dominance of screens in children’s lives, a unique initiative titled ‘Khilonewala’ – Toy Library was launched in Sangti, Sanjauli on April 11, emerging as a first-of-its-kind concept.
The two-day launch event, held on April 11 and 12, saw an engaging exhibition of toys, games, and books for children aged 1 to 12 years, drawing enthusiastic participation from families across Sangti, Sanjauli, Malyana, Chamiyana and nearby areas.
Positioned as a social mission, Khilonewala aims to gently steer children away from excessive use of mobile phones, televisions, and computers by reintroducing them to the joy of play-based learning.
The toy library offers age-appropriate educational toys, games, and books designed to nurture creativity, imagination, and social skills during the crucial growing years.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Reena Singh, a retired principal and one of the key forces behind the initiative, said, “In today’s digital age, children are increasingly confined to screens, which limits their creative growth.
‘Khilonewala’ is an attempt to channel their formative years towards imagination, hands-on learning, and meaningful play. We want children to rediscover the joy of learning through exploration and interaction.”
The initiative has been spearheaded by a group of social workers, with Dr. Singh playing a pivotal role in conceptualizing and shaping the project.
Adding a heartwarming touch to the launch, the toy library was inaugurated by young Raghavendra Singh, fondly known as ‘Raghu Dada’, on the occasion of his second birthday.
He was also named the brand ambassador of the initiative, symbolizing the spirit of childhood that the project seeks to celebrate.
Parents and local residents lauded the effort, calling it a timely and much-needed intervention to support holistic child development in an increasingly digital world.
With its innovative approach, Khilonewala is being seen as a promising step toward reclaiming childhood through creativity, learning, and play.
