SJVN’s Buxar Project Goes Fully Operational, Adds 1,320 MW Thermal Capacity

Shimla, September 12:

SJVN’s 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar became fully operational on Saturday after its second 660 MW unit achieved commercial operation.

With Unit-II achieving COD, both units of the ₹13,756.56-crore project at Chausa in Buxar district are now commercially operational. It is SJVN’s first thermal power project to achieve full operational status.

The project, executed by SJVN Thermal Private Limited, uses supercritical technology and advanced emission-control systems. It is expected to generate 9,828.72 million units annually at an 85% plant load factor.

Bihar will receive 85% of the power under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement, strengthening electricity availability and helping meet peak-hour demand in the state and eastern region.

Unit-I began commercial operation on November 14, 2025, following its virtual inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 22, 2025.

Around 65,000 workers were engaged during construction, while the project has generated direct and indirect employment and economic opportunities for local communities.

SJVN CMD Bhupender Gupta credited government support, employees and stakeholders for the project’s completion and said the milestone would strengthen energy security and regional development.
