Reciting his revolutionary poems and songs, the writers gathered at Sundarnagar and remembered Baba Kanshi Ram, who was given the tile of Pahadi Gandhi by India’s first Prime Minister Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1937.
Baba Kanshi Ram was born on 11th July, 1882 in Dada Sibba Una. He was a poet and an activist of Independence Movement, who took on the might of the colonial British by almost "penning and ponding poems" against them.
In 1931, the British handed out a death sentence to three luminaries of Freedom Movement, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev in 1931. It had a profound impact on Baba Kanshi Ram as it burnt a fire of patriotism in him and a revolt against the British.
Subsequently, Baba vowed to wear black clothes until India achieved its independence.
It is recorded that he adhered to his vow until he died on 15th October, 1943 at the age of just 61.
Baba Kanshi Ram revered affectionately as the ‘Siyahposh Jarnail’ (General in Black).
Baba Kanshi Ram went to jail 11 times, spending nine years of his life in Jails. He travelled extensively in Lahore, Amritsar and other parts of Punjab and Himachal, reciting his poems to breathe a fire of nationalism among people.
Despite having sent to jail 11 times, Baba refused to budge and continued his tirade against the British by writing patriotism-inspiring poetry to motivate people and youth of the country to drive away the British.
He was titled as ‘Bulbul-e-Pahar’ by Indian 'Cokila', Sarojini Naidu in 1927 when she had come to Kangra.
