NEW DELHI/SHIMLA- Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has once again secured the top spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The prestigious technical institute has maintained its No. 1 position in the 'Overall' category for the fifth consecutive year and in the 'Engineering' category for the eighth consecutive year.
Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs and Education, Government of India, announced the NIRF 2023 rankings and presented the awards in New Delhi.
Expressing his congratulations, Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh highlighted the importance of the NIRF rankings in aiding student selection and driving improvement in teaching, research, and resources at educational institutions. He also commended the performance of IITs, IIMs, NITs, IIITs, and the growth of private universities in the rankings.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, received the awards at the event and praised the collective efforts of students, faculty, and staff for their exceptional work. He expressed pride in IIT Madras' recognition as a global leader in research and education and emphasized the institute's commitment to its strategic plan.
As an 'Institution of Eminence' (IoE), IIT Madras has launched several centers of excellence to undertake cutting-edge research in various fields.
Under the vision of "IIT Madras for All," the institute has introduced initiatives like the B.Sc. degree in Electronics, open to students across India, and the BS Degree in Data Science and Applications for government school students in Tamil Nadu.
NIRF rankings, initiated in 2015, evaluate educational institutions based on various parameters such as teaching, research, graduation outcome, and perception.
NIRF 2023 rankings today, revealing that no private institute from Himachal has made it to the top 100 among the 1,250+ participating institutes.
The rankings, a benchmark for educational excellence, showcase the dominance of government institutions.
IIT Guwahati secured the ninth position, followed by Panjab University at 44 and Chandigarh University at 45. IIT Mandi claimed the 73rd spot.
UPES in Dehradun stood at 79 and is doing good in Engineering with ranking at 57.
AIIMS Rishikesh secured the 86th rank, and Graphic Era University in Dehradun held the 89th position.
Dr YS parmar University of horticulture and forestry Solan ranks at 114 in an overall NIRF Ranking- 23.
Dr CCS Agriculture University Palampur stands at 109 in an overall ranking.
The absence of private institutes among the top-ranked institutions highlights the challenges they face in competing with well-established government institutes. It also raises questions about the quality of education and resources available at private institutions.
