SJVN’s Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Station Crosses Historic 150 Billion Units Power Generation
Shimla, March 9: The SJVN Limited on Monday achieved a major milestone as its flagship Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station crossed 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative electricity generation, marking a significant achievement in India’s hydropower sector.
The project, located on the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh, is the country’s largest underground hydropower station and has been supplying clean energy to the northern grid since its commissioning in May 2004.
Congratulating the team, CMD Bhupender Gupta said the project has consistently delivered reliable green power and played a key role in strengthening the northern power grid.
He said the station recorded its highest annual generation of 7,610.257 million units in FY 2011–12, while July 2024 saw a record monthly output of 1,222.170 million units.
The project also achieved its highest-ever daily generation of 39.572 million units on August 13, 2024, reflecting its strong operational performance.
Director Civil Ajay Kumar Sharma praised the dedication of present and former employees and said the project has significantly contributed to regional development and employment.
Rajeev Kapoor thanked the Ministry of Power, Himachal Pradesh government, employees and local communities for their continued support.
Officials said the 150 BU clean energy generation has helped reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening India’s climate goals.
