SHIMLA: Mary Kom, Padma Vibhushan awardee, world’s six-time boxing champion, Anju Bobby George, Olympics medal winner and HRTC’s first bus driver Seema Thakur today shared their stories of success on International Women’s Day here inspiring the SJVN engineers and managers and others.
SJVN in order to propagate the message of “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, organized two motivational talks by Mary Kom, now an MP Rajya Sabha, Anju Bobby George, the famous Olympian Indian Athlete who had won the bronze medal in long jump in last summer Olympics. The talks were organized for the company employees at Kufri, and at Chail, near Shimla today.
Marry Kom narrated the challenges she faced for coming up to the level of international boxing. She the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, the only female boxer to have won a Medal in each of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer to win as many as eight World Championship medals She batted for turning challenges into opportunities.
Speaking to the employees in her motivational talk Anju Bobby George narrated how she was able to carve a history for the nation when she won bronze medal in long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. With this achievement, Ms Anju said she had become the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Championships in Athletics, jumping 6.70m. Anju was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2002, Khel Ratna in 2003 and Padma Shri in 2004.
Addressing the senior executives at Chail, SJVN”s CMD Nand Lal Sharma said women are breaking traditional biases and achieving new heights. The social fabric still must go a long way in fight against these biases, he added.
He lauded the efforts of Ms. Mary Kom, Geeta Kapur the first full time Director in the Board of Directors of SJVN in breaking these biases or barriers. During the event Sharma also felicitated the only woman driver in HRTC Seema Thakur. The efforts like that of Seema Thakur are required for achieving gender equality in our society. He also presented a citation and cash reward of Rs. 25,000 to Seema Thakur.
Earlier, welcoming the Chief Guest Nand Lal Sharma, and Ms Mary Kom, Director (Personnel), SJVN, Geeta Kapur said that the objective of organizing such motivational talks is to instil spirit of sportsmanship among all the employees of the company, especially the women employees. By organizing such talks SJVN has been actively participating in the global mission to disseminate the message of gender equality for making world a better society, with no gender bias.
