SHIMLA: HP Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla Urged the governments for Protection of Himalayan Ecosystem and Halts Riverbank Constructions as recommended by the experts.
In a three-day International Conference organized by the Govind Ballabh Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Shukla emphasized the critical need for preserving the delicate Himalayan ecosystem.
Addressing the audience, he highlighted the imperative to prioritize sustainable livelihood issues in the state and advocated for a thorough examination of the region's fragile ecology before undertaking any development projects.
Expressing his concerns over the escalating construction activities along riverbanks, Governor Shukla underscored the necessity to safeguard natural resources, particularly water and forest wealth.
He urged for a meticulous approach, emphasizing the importance of planting trees based on soil fertility tests and geographical conditions.
Furthermore, Governor Shukla called for comprehensive research on the rivers of Himachal Pradesh, with a specific focus on the Beas and Parvati River basins, to formulate effective measures against potential floods and other environmental hazards.
Prof. Sunil Notiyal, Director of the Govind Ballabh Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, echoed the Governor's sentiments, stressing the institute's commitment to advancing scientific research and developing integrated management strategies for conservation purposes.
He highlighted the critical role of collaborative efforts in addressing environmental challenges and reiterated the institute's dedication to contributing to sustainable development in the Himalayan region.
Governor also released two publications of the Institute, emphasizing the importance of disseminating research findings to both the State and Central Governments for informed decision-making.
