Citizens Take to Social Media as ‘Brand Doon’ Takes a Hit, CM Accused of Looking Away

Dehradun, April 4: Citizens of Dehradun have taken to social media platforms in growing numbers, voicing anger and frustration over what they describe as the steady decline of the city’s identity, even as they allege that the state leadership remains focused on “different agendas and priorities” instead of addressing the mounting urban crisis.

Hashtags, open letters, and sharp posts have flooded timelines, with residents—both within the valley and those living outside—flagging concerns over deteriorating civic conditions, rising crime, and unchecked urbanisation.

Many allege that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has failed to respond meaningfully, despite repeated appeals.

Once known for its greenery, elite institutions, and peaceful environment, Dehradun is now “bursting at the seams,” citizens say.

Rapid concretisation, deforestation, mining, and unplanned growth have significantly altered the city’s landscape, while issues like drug abuse, errant nightlife, and street violence are adding to public anxiety.

Social media users have been particularly critical of what they call a “disconnect” between governance and ground realities.

“The city is crying for attention, but priorities seem elsewhere,” read one widely shared post.

Joining the chorus, Anoop Nautiyal of the Social Development for Communities Foundation warned, “Dehradun is at a tipping point.

Governance must shift focus to sustainable urban planning and environmental protection. Ignoring these warning signs will have long-term consequences.”

Citizen forum have echoed similar concerns. Members of a Dehradun-based citizens’ collective said, “There is anger and helplessness. People feel the administration has cold-shouldered its responsibility to preserve the city’s legacy. The gap between promises and action is widening.”

Observers caution that the damage is not limited to the city alone but could impact the broader image of Uttarakhand, which has long been associated with ecological richness and quality living.

With frustration spilling onto digital platforms, residents are now demanding accountability and immediate corrective measures.

“If this continues, Dehradun risks losing its soul,” said a citizen in a viral post.

As online outrage grows louder, the message from the ground—and now from screens—is unmistakable: citizens want action, not diversion.
