The death toll in the coal mine incident in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has risen to 25, police confirmed on Friday.

Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said that more bodies were recovered during the ongoing rescue and retrieval operations at the site.

Rescue teams, including district authorities and emergency responders, have been working continuously in the hazardous mine area since the incident was reported. Despite difficult conditions, efforts are underway to ensure that all victims are retrieved and identified.

“The death toll in the East Jaintia Hills coal mine incident has increased to 25,” SP Vikash Kumar  told media,  adding that search operations are still in progress.

The tragic incident has once again brought the spotlight on the dangers associated with coal mining in the region and the need for stricter safety oversight.

Authorities have ordered a detailed inquiry to ascertain the cause of the incident and to fix responsibility.

Further details are awaited as rescue operations continue.
