The view of Shimla city

SHIMLA-   Himachal Pradesh government is set to revolutionize transportation in Shimla by developing an eco-friendly and innovative mode of transport.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced plans for an urban ropeway project that aims to alleviate congestion in the city and enhancing its tourism potential.

This ambitious initiative, with an estimated cost of Rs. 1546.40 crore, will span a network of 14.13 kilometers, connecting 15 stations across Shimla.

The government aims to decongest  the city which faces gridlock during peak hours in summer tourist season, stretching its capacity to limits.

The Shimla Ropeway Project, the first of its kind in India and only the second in the world, holds great promise for the city's future.

The State Government intends to replicate this success by developing similar urban ropeway projects in Dharamshala and Manali Town.

Under the guidance of the Ropeway & Rapid Transport System Development Corporation (RTDC), the implementation of the Shimla Ropeway Project has already made significant progress.

Drone surveys have been completed, while traffic surveys are nearing completion, expected to wrap up by mid-April 2023.

Geo-tech investigations and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) studies are currently underway, said the state spokesperson.

Ropeways have emerged as a preferred mode of transportation, particularly in hilly and inaccessible areas, providing both fast and last-mile connectivity. In addition to their convenience and safety, ropeways align with the government's commitment to a green and clean Himachal, serving as an eco-friendly and sustainable transport solution.

Shimla is home to over  3.08 lakh residents and attracting over 40 lakh tourists annually. The city has for long grappled with the issue of narrow roads and heavy traffic, particularly during the peak tourist season.

The introduction of the urban ropeway network promises to be a game-changer, allowing visitors to park their vehicles at the city's entry point and seamlessly board the ropeway to enjoy the serene setting of Shimla's hills.
