ABVIMAS Conducts Emergency Manoeuvring and Landing Training for Paragliding Pilots at Bilaspur
Bilaspur: The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali, has commenced an intensive training program aimed at enhancing the safety and skills of tandem paragliding pilots.
The training, known as Simulation d'Incident en Vol (SIV), started on September 16 and is being conducted over the Govind Sagar water body in Bilaspur.
SIV courses are critical for paragliding pilots, as they focus on teaching glider handling in unstable situations and recovering from in-flight incidents.
"This training is vital for every paragliding pilot. It minimizes the risk of accidents and equips them with life-saving techniques for emergency situations," said Avinash Negi, Director of ABVIMAS, Manali.
The course, mandatory under Aero Sports Rules for tandem pilots, includes manoeuvres such as gentle spirals and asymmetric collapses.
It helps pilots understand their glider's limitations and prepares them for real-life emergencies like spins or collapses during flight.
Negi further added that the training site, Bandla Dhar in Bilaspur, is ideal due to its proximity to the Govind Sagar water body, which provides a safe environment for practice.
"The practice needs to be carried out over a water body, and Bandla Dhar is the most suitable site.
However, earlier this year in March and April, we trained 150 pilots at Pong Dam due to insufficient water levels at Govind Sagar."
According to Negi, 150 slots were opened for online bookings for this session, and all have been filled.
"If more pilots enroll, we will start new batches. Each batch consists of 20 trainee pilots, and we are fully prepared to meet the demand," he said.
Safety remains a top priority, with emergency teams and power boats deployed at the site to handle any contingencies.
The training is expected to continue for a month, depending on the number of pilots registering.
Negi emphasized the importance of this training, saying, "Every pilot must undergo such training to ensure they are equipped to react effectively during emergencies."
