IMD Sounds Snow and Rainfall Alert: A Windfall for Farmers, Power Producers, Hoteliers, and the Public
Shimla, February 24, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a rain and snowfall alert for Himachal Pradesh, forecasting heavy to very heavy precipitation at isolated places between February 27 and 29.
This spell of wet weather is expected to benefit various stakeholders, including farmers, power producers, hoteliers, and the general public.
According to IMD's latest bulletin, a Western Disturbance over northern Iran and another cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan are set to impact the Himalayan region. The weather forecast indicates thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places from February 26 to 28, along with heavy rain and snow on February 27 and 28.
Daytime temperatures are likely to drop, with cold day conditions expected at isolated places on February 27 and 28.
Farmers Anticipate Crop Boost
For farmers, this precipitation is a blessing, especially for apple growers preparing their orchards for the upcoming flowering season. The snowfall in higher reaches will help recharge groundwater, while rainfall in lower areas will improve soil moisture, essential for wheat and vegetable crops.
Power Producers Welcome Snowfall
The heavy snowfall is also crucial for the state's hydroelectric projects. Snowmelt from higher altitudes sustains water flow in rivers during summer, ensuring steady power generation.
This forecast is particularly encouraging for power producers struggling with low water levels in reservoirs.
Hoteliers Expect Tourism Boom
Tourism stakeholders, particularly in hill stations like Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala, are optimistic that fresh snowfall will attract tourists, boosting the hospitality sector after a relatively dry winter. Hotel bookings are already picking up, with many establishments expecting full occupancy by the weekend.
Public Advised to Prepare for Cold Conditions
The IMD has warned of cold day conditions in parts of the state, advising residents and tourists to stay warm and exercise caution during outdoor activities.
While the snowfall is expected to enhance the scenic beauty of the hills, travelers are urged to check weather and road conditions before planning their journeys.
Current Temperature Trends
Minimum temperatures recorded on February 24 show a slight rise across most stations. Keylong remained the coldest at -9.7°C, followed by Kukumseri at -11.2°C and Tabo at -7.5°C. Shimla recorded a minimum of 6.2°C, while Manali and Dharamshala reported 1.7°C and 4.8°C, respectively. No rainfall or snowfall was recorded in the last 24 hours.
With this upcoming spell of snow and rain, stakeholders across the board are hoping for a season of abundance, improved water resources, and a thriving tourism sector.
The IMD will continue to monitor the situation, issuing updates as needed to ensure public safety and preparedness.
