Shimla/New Delhi: In a swift response to the nationwide uproar following the brutal rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an advisory to all medical colleges across India.
The notification, signed by NMC Secretary Dr. B. Shrinivas, took cognizance of the recent surge in violence against doctors and mandates that every medical institution implements a robust safety policy.
Medical Colleges have been ordered to ensure that all staff—faculty, medical students, and resident doctors—are protected, particularly in sensitive areas like OPDs, wards, hostels, and residential quarters.
The advisory calls for well-lit corridors, extensive CCTV coverage, and the deployment of both male and female security personnel in critical spots, including labor rooms and casualty wards.
The NMC also demands that any violent incidents be promptly investigated by college management, with an FIR lodged without delay.
Furthermore, a detailed action-taken report must be sent to the NMC within 48 hours of any such incident.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the United Doctors Front Association (UDFA) have lauded the NMC's swift and decisive action.
Dr. Lakshya Mittal, UDFA President, praised the move, emphasizing that it’s a crucial step towards safeguarding medical professionals in their workplaces.
