Shimla: Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri championed the cause of road safety in Himachal as he inaugurated a Road Safety Walk from the State secretariat to Shimla's Scandal Point on January 24, 2024.
Agnihotri emphasized the need to cultivate a road safety culture among the public, aiming to reduce accidents and save lives. Acknowledging that 90% of road accidents result from human error, he highlighted ongoing awareness campaigns organized across the State to educate people on traffic rules and government initiatives.
Agnihotri praised the efforts of the Transport department, citing a significant 13% decline in road accidents due to their initiatives.
He outlined plans for the installation of CCTV cameras and the implementation of an Intelligent Traffic Management system to enhance road safety measures.
Additionally, he commended the collaboration with stakeholders such as Taxi Unions, Heavy Goods Vehicle Unions, NGOs, and the general public in organizing regular awareness camps.
Expressing gratitude to secretariat employees for their contributions to the success of the annual walk, Agnihotri reiterated the commitment to taking all necessary measures to reduce road traffic accidents and their associated fatalities and injuries in Himachal Pradesh.
Agnihotri led a workshop on 'Road Safety Awareness' at HIPA, engaging with women drivers who shared their experiences.
With over 1,10,000 women drivers in Himachal Pradesh, Agnihotri highlighted their contribution to gender equality and emphasized the importance of safe roads for women's access to work, education, health, and social services.
The workshop aimed to enhance the road safety system by interacting with women drivers and understanding their perspectives. Director Transport Anupam Kashyap highlighted the ongoing road safety awareness campaign, focusing on women's participation.
Women from various segments, like Kajal Mokta and Bhavna, shared their driving experiences, encouraging more women to actively contribute to road safety awareness.
The women drivers urged girls and women to join hands with the department to increase awareness and participation in road safety initiatives.
