Himachal Pradesh to set up Special Task Force to Combat Drug Abuse and Organized Crime
Shimla, January 15: In a decisive move to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse and organized crime, the Himachal Pradesh Government has announced the formation of a Special Task Force (STF). Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized the state's commitment to making Himachal Pradesh drug-free and fostering a healthier society.
The STF, to be led by an Additional Director General of Police or Inspector General of Police, will be equipped with a dedicated commando force trained in anti-narcotics and organized crime operations in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau.
The force will comprise newly recruited personnel alongside experienced officers from the existing police cadre.
Targeting the Root of the Problem
"The drug problem is a global challenge, and Himachal Pradesh is determined to address it with stringent measures," said the Chief Minister. The government has enacted tough laws, including provisions to confiscate properties of individuals involved in drug trafficking.
The STF will focus on dismantling drug networks, apprehending kingpins, and conducting coordinated raids. Special emphasis will be placed on gathering intelligence, seizing illicit assets, and preventing repeat offenses through preventive detention.
The faster forensic protocols and special NDPS courts will be established to expedite investigations and prosecutions.
Rehabilitation and Community Outreach
Moving beyond punitive measures, the government plans to enhance access to rehabilitation and addiction treatment. Initiatives like “Him Veer” and “Him Dost” will promote community involvement, while awareness campaigns will be conducted in schools and colleges.
"Rehabilitation is as important as law enforcement in this fight. Our approach is comprehensive, balancing strict action with compassion," added CM Sukhu.
Widespread Operations and Monitoring
The STF will function across three zones in Dharamshala, Parwanoo, and Mandi, with its headquarters in Shimla. Special STF police stations will be set up, and the force will coordinate with local police units for seamless operations. It will also monitor de-addiction centers to prevent misuse.
The task force will submit fortnightly progress reports to the government for review and necessary strategic updates.
