Trout fish upswing in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla/Kullu: Himachal Pradesh has achieved remarkable growth in trout production, reaching 1,388 metric tonnes in the fiscal year 2023-24.

This is a significant rise from the 1,170.50 metric tonnes produced in 2022-23, reflecting an increase of 15.7%. The state has made steady progress from the 913.50 metric tonnes recorded in 2021-22, demonstrating a consistent upward trend in fish farming.

This success is attributed to the efforts of both local fishermen and government policies aimed at boosting the sector.

Currently, 742 families in the state are involved in trout farming, benefiting from nine government and six private trout hatcheries that supply fish seeds.

The fisheries department has also been active in providing training on modern trout farming techniques, ensuring sustainable practices.

Key regions like Barot, Tirthan, and Chirgaon are well-known for their trout farms, where the pristine river conditions support the flourishing trout population.

The state's commitment to advancing trout farming has not only enhanced the livelihoods of rural families but also contributed to the local tourism industry, as the demand for trout grows both domestically and internationally, especially in European markets.

Himachal Pradesh has not only boosted its trout production to 1,388 metric tonnes in 2023-24, up from 1,170.50 metric tonnes in the previous year, but has also drawn the attention of tourists who relish this delicacy.

Trout farms in regions like Barot, Tirthan, and Chirgaon are now becoming popular destinations, with visitors making a beeline to trout resorts and joints serving freshly caught trout.

The state’s pristine rivers, such as the Uhl in Barot and Tirthan in Kullu, provide the perfect environment for trout farming, contributing to both the local economy and tourism.

Tourists are flocking to these areas not just for the scenic beauty but also to indulge in trout dishes prepared by local resorts and restaurants, said Ranjiv Bharti  a renowned homecstay owner from Tirthan.

This growing demand has helped turn trout farming into a significant driver of rural employment while enhancing Himachal Pradesh's culinary appeal.

The success of trout farming is creating new opportunities for locals, with trout joints increasingly becoming a must-visit for food enthusiasts.

HP CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the state government continues to develop policies to further strengthen the sector and provide sustainable economic opportunities in rural areas.
