LEH — Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved a 233 per cent increase in the monthly honorarium for nambardars (village heads), locally referred to as gobas, across the Union Territory of Ladakh.
According to an official statement by the Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh, monthly allowances for 247 village heads will rise from ₹1,500 to ₹5,000.
The official release noted that the revised emoluments were fixed under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Lambardari Act, 1972, and the Jammu and Kashmir Lambardari Rules, 1980, as applicable to Ladakh. The enhancement marks the first adjustment to the allowance structure in ten years
Lieutenant Governor Saxena stated that the policy decision follows administrative outreach visits and representations submitted by village delegations.
The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that nambardars serve as an essential communication link between rural communities and the public administration, particularly regarding civic management, water distribution, and the last-mile implementation of welfare schemes. The revised rates will take formal effect upon publication in the Official Gazette.
