Shimla: Cyber Fraudsters Use DC Shimla’s Photograph on WhatsApp, Administration Sounds Alert
Cybercriminals have begun targeting even top government officials. In a fresh case from Shimla, fraudsters misused the name and photograph of Deputy Commissioner Shimla, Anupam Kashyap, to scam people through WhatsApp.
According to officials, the fraudsters created a fake WhatsApp account using the DC’s photo and started messaging acquaintances and government officers, pretending to be from the “DC Office.”
The fake messages attempted to seek favours and trap unsuspecting individuals.
DC Shimla confirmed the misuse and urged the public to stay vigilant. He said, “Do not trust any suspicious message. Do not share personal information or transfer money without proper verification.”
The district administration has filed a complaint with the Cyber Police, and technical investigations into the fake numbers are underway.
Officials warn that such crimes are increasing, with fraudsters frequently impersonating high-ranking officers to deceive citizens.
Authorities have advised people to:
Avoid responding to unknown or suspicious WhatsApp messages
Report fake accounts immediately
Verify official numbers before sharing any information or making transactions
The administration has termed it a “serious cyber offence” and assured that strict action will follow once the culprits are traced.
