SHIMLA:
An unprecedented incident at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) here on Monday triggered widespread outrage after a video surfaced showing a doctor allegedly assaulting a patient inside a hospital ward.
In the viral clip, the doctor is seen beating a patient who was lying on a bed, delivering multiple punches.
The patient is also seen kicking in self-defence before the doctor allegedly lunges again and rains five to six punches in quick succession.
Attendants and other doctors are then seen intervening to defuse the situation and prevent it from escalating further.
As the video spread rapidly across social media platforms, the IGMC administration swung into damage-control mode.
Medical Superintendent said the institute had taken serious note of the incident and ordered an inquiry.
“We have constituted a high-level inquiry committee headed by the Head of the Department of Medicine.
The committee will submit its report by this evening, and strict action will be taken strictly as per the findings of the inquiry,” Dr. Roy said.
While the exact trigger behind the doctor’s outburst remains unclear, eyewitnesses maintained that the assault was unfortunate and could not be without provocation.
They said the patient was lying on the bed and no medical examination or diagnosis had begun when the incident occurred. But what provoked doctor remains unclear as no doctor will behave like this without a provocation.
“Whatever the provocation, a doctor is expected to remain calm and professional,” an eyewitness said.
Meanwhile, the attendants of the patient have lodged an FIR with the police, seeking stringent action against the doctor involved.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions online, with netizens demanding immediate and exemplary action to uphold the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship.
Hospital sources said further steps would be taken after the inquiry report is submitted.
