SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh has moved to overhaul security across all 17 private universities in the state following recent unrest in Punjab and Chandigarh institutions.

Acting on the Chief Minister's directives, the state Director General of Police convened a high-level review meeting in Shimla with university vice-chancellors to establish an airtight safety framework.

Taking cues from incidents at Lovely Professional University and Chitkara University, the DGP directed campuses to ramp up surveillance at all entry-exit points, hostels, and visitor zones

The Vice-Chancellor have been directed to make  police verification and training mandatory for private security staff.

The police chief ordered universities to actively join the state's anti-chitta campaign to eliminate drug networks around campuses.

The universities have been asked to appoint authorized spokespersons to counter fake news alongside police cybercrime cells.

Campuses must also appoint dedicated nodal security officers to conduct joint audits with local police.

They would  deploy student traffic volunteers, and promote the top-ranked 112 emergency helpline along with its Track Me feature for women's safety.

These measures must come into force with immediate effect.
