SHIMLA / SARAHAN — The unveiling of a statue commemorating six-time Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Late Raja Virbhadra Singh in his ancestral seat of Sarahan turned into a glaring political show of strength, laying bare the deepening fault lines within the ruling Congress party.
While Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri officiated the ceremony at the historic Bhimakali temple complex, the conspicuous absence of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and his inner coterie underscored a widening internal crisis that threatens to derail party unity ahead of next year’s Assembly elections.
The Sarahan gathering served as an informal rallying ground for the heavyweight faction aligned with the late patriarch’s legacy and his family seat, the influential Holly Lodge. Flanking Pratibha Singh—former State Congress President and Mandi MP—and PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh were key regional stalwarts, including Education Minister Rohit Thakur, Tourism Development Corporation Chairman R.S. Bali, Theog MLA Kuldeep Singh Rathore, Rohru MLA Mohan Lal Brakta, and veteran leaders Kaul Singh Thakur and Ram Lal Thakur.
The congregation presented a consolidated counterweight to Sukhu’s camp, signaling that the legacy of Virbhadra Singh remains a potent, mobilizable political currency that will not yield easily to internal consolidation by the Chief Minister.
Adding a sharp twist of political theater to the day's optics, Chief Minister Sukhu chose not to travel to Sarahan. Instead, he maintained a distinct parallel program in the state capital, inaugurating the new secretariat building flanked strictly by his loyal civic and legislative leadership—including local Shimla MLA Harish Janartha, Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan, and Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal.
The visual contrast could not have been starker: while a formidable bloc of ministers and regional satraps closed ranks around the late stalwart's memorial in the upper hills, the Chief Minister deliberately signaled that the administrative reins and local capital machinery remain firmly anchored in his grip.
The political temperature had surged days prior when Pratibha Singh publicly accused the Chief Minister of systematically attempting to erase the six-time Chief Minister’s developmental imprint.
The catalyst was Sukhu’s recent tour of Rampur and remote belts around Rohtang, where he allegedly omitted any reference to Virbhadra Singh or his family’s decades-long patronage of the region.
Pratibha Singh’s overt grievance confirmed long-simmering resentment that the current regime is actively attempting to dilute Holly Lodge’s traditional supremacy over the state unit.
Under the surface lies an intense institutional tug-of-war. Party insiders and loyalist factions allege that key organizational and administrative appointments across boards, corporations, and district units have increasingly favored non-loyalists of the Virbhadra camp.
The perceived sidelining of veteran cadre in favor of the Chief Minister’s trusted circle—including ministers such as Harshwardhan Chauhan and Rajesh Dharmani—has sparked whispers of an unwritten purge, fueling growing friction between legacy leaders and the current administration.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has swiftly seized on the infighting. Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan have repeatedly accused Sukhu of pursuing a vendetta to politically marginalize Holly Lodge.
By framing the conflict as an insult to Himachal's tallest political icon, the BJP is seeking to peel away the Rajput and royalist base in upper Himachal—a traditional Congress bastion—while highlighting instability inside the ruling dispensation.
For the Congress high command in New Delhi, the factional escalation represents a serious strategic dilemma. With Himachal Pradesh heading into an election cycle, balancing Sukhu’s institutional authority against the formidable regional influence of Holly Lodge and its allied ministers is essential to prevent a repeat of past cross-voting episodes.
As of now neither camp are willing to back down. Both arevrunning parallel political stages on the same day. It only shows that the battle for control over the Congress machinery in Himachal Pradesh is now out in the open.
