Monsoon Fury in Himachal

Monsoon Fury Claims 108 Lives Across Himachal, 613 Roads Blocked and 265 Water Schemes Hit.  Efforts on to restore traffic on roads and water supply in Villages across Himachal.

Shimla, August 6:

The monsoon mayhem in Himachal Pradesh has claimed 108 lives so far, with landslides, flash floods, lightning, and electrocutions continuing to wreak havoc across the hill state.

As per the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), two fresh casualties were reported on August 5 — one from Kangra due to snakebite and another in Una due to flash flood.

Among the deadliest districts, Mandi leads with 23 deaths, followed by Kangra (25), Kullu (10), Chamba and Hamirpur (9 each). The toll includes 17 deaths in cloudbursts, 20 by drowning, and 11 due to snakebites. Another 86 people have died in road accidents during the season.

Infrastructure remains in tatters with 613 roads blocked, including major national highways NH-21, NH-305, NH-003 and NH-05. The worst-hit districts are Mandi (375 roads), Kullu (89), and Kangra (23). Kinnaur’s Nigulsari and Skibba areas are once again isolated due to NH-05 blockages by landslides and flash floods.

Power supply has also taken a major hit with 1,491 Distribution Transformers (DTRs) disrupted. Solan alone reported 709 DTR outages, followed by Kullu (457) and Mandi (301).

Meanwhile, 265 water supply schemes remain disrupted, mainly in Kangra, Mandi, and Solan.

From June 20 to August 5, the total loss to public property has crossed ₹1,85,251 lakh (₹1,852.5 crore). Mandi tops the loss chart with ₹1,160 crore, followed by Kangra and Chamba. Over 27,000 livestock and poultry deaths have also been reported.

Even as restoration efforts continue round-the-clock, recurring rains and fragile slopes are slowing down the process.

Roads remain risky, villages cut off, and water and power services are limping back under temporary arrangements in some regions.
