Hamirpur’s Son, Now Navy’s No. 2: Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan Takes Charge as Vice Chief

It’s a proud moment for Himachal! Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, a native of Hiranagar in Hamirpur, today took over as the 47th Vice Chief of Naval Staff — the second-highest position in the Indian Navy. He began the day by paying tribute to fallen heroes at the National War Memorial.
With over 30 years of service, Vatsayan has commanded key warships like INS Vibhuti, Nashak, and Sahyadri, and led the Eastern Fleet. A gunnery and missile systems specialist, he has also held top policy and planning posts, including at the National Defence Academy and the Integrated Defence Staff.
Awarded the AVSM and Nau Sena Medal, he is known for his sharp leadership and strategic foresight.
Backed by his family — wife Sarita, an ISB-graduate son, and a daughter with a Humanities degree — Vice Admiral Vatsayan’s journey is a shining example of Himachal’s proud military tradition. His younger brother Dr Ajay.
His appointment has triggered a wave of celebration in Hamirpur, where residents proudly refer to him as “Hamirpur ka sher”.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, while congratulating the Vice Admiral, said,
“This is a proud day not just for Hamirpur, but for all of Himachal. Vice Admiral Vatsayan's elevation reflects the values of service, discipline, and excellence that define our people. Himachal has always stood tall in service to the nation, and his journey will inspire many youngsters in our hills to join the armed forces.”
