Women’sDayAtRotaryClubShimla

Shimla, March 8

Marking International Women’s Day, the Rotary Club Shimla on Sunday brought together women from diverse walks of life and honoured several unsung heroes during a special programme titled “Project Astitva – Celebrating Womanhood” held at Rotary Town Hall.

Organised by Rotary Partners, the event aimed at recognising the contribution of women in society while spreading awareness about their rights, safety and financial empowerment.

The programme began with a traditional tilak welcome for participating women. Around 30 women including police constables, nurses, homemakers and sanitation workers—often the silent pillars of society—were felicitated for their dedication and selfless service.

Women who have made a mark in their respective fields were also honoured, inspiring the younger generation to pursue leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to society.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy SP and Staff Officer Geetanjali Thakur highlighted important aspects of women’s safety and shared practical safety protocols that women should follow in difficult situations.

Advocate Shilpa Sood informed participants about legal rights available to women, financial independence and the procedures for lodging complaints related to domestic violence and dowry harassment.

Adding to the awareness drive, India Post Office agent Monika explained various small savings schemes that can help women achieve financial security.

Women professionals from different sectors including a radio oncologist, school principal and home baker also participated in the programme, sharing their experiences and perspectives.

As part of its empowerment initiative, the Rotary Club also supported a widow working as a domestic help by providing her with a knitting kit to help convert her skill into a source of livelihood.

In another gesture of encouragement, the club extended financial assistance of ₹6,000 to a young girl to support her training in Kathak dance.

The club also announced a two-day baking workshop scheduled on March 23 and 24 at Jawaharlal Nehru Government College of Fine Arts, where around 100 young women will be trained in practical baking skills to help them explore employment and self-employment opportunities.

An interactive installation titled “The Wall of Astitva” allowed participants to share their thoughts and messages on women empowerment, adding a personal and inspirational touch to the celebration.

The event turned into a vibrant celebration of women’s strength, dignity and contribution, reinforcing the message of empowerment and equal opportunity in society.
