Western Disturbance Triggers 4-Day Wet Spell Across Western Himalayas; Yellow Alert for Uttarakhand as Farmers and Tourists Advised Caution

SHIMLA / DEHRADUN/SRINAGAR/LEH:

An active Western Disturbance sweeping across north Punjab and neighboring areas has triggered a fresh spell of rain and high-altitude snowfall across the Western Himalayan region.

In its mid-day Mountain Weather Bulletin issued on Friday, October 30, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Himalayan Mountain Meteorology Division forecasted intermittent wet weather through November 2 across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with periodic precipitation extending into Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

With the region transitioning into early winter, the meteorological department has placed both the Garhwal and Kumaun divisions of Uttarakhand under a Yellow Watch ("Be Updated") for October 30 and 31, prompting immediate advisories for high-altitude trekkers, tourists, and the agrarian community.

Synoptic Systems & Past 24-Hour Realised Weather

According to the IMD bulletin (based on 0830 hours IST observations), the Western Disturbance previously positioned over north Pakistan now persists as a cyclonic circulation over north Punjab and its neighborhood at 4.5 km above mean sea level. It is supported by a trough aloft in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies running roughly along Longitude 70°E to the north of Latitude 25°N at 5.8 km above mean sea level.

Over the past 24 hours, the system has already delivered:

Widespread rain/snow across the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand (76–100% of stations reporting precipitation).

Scattered (SCT) rain/snow across the High Hills region of Himachal Pradesh (26–50% of stations).

Isolated (ISOL) precipitation in the Kashmir division, the Lower Hills of Himachal Pradesh, and the Kumaun division of Uttarakhand.

Mainly dry conditions in the Jammu division and Ladakh & Gilgit.

Uttarakhand: Both Garhwal and Kumaun regions are slated to receive Fairly Widespread (FWS) rain and snow on Friday (Oct 30), tapering to Isolated activity from October 31 to November 2 before turning completely dry from November 3 to 5.

Himachal Pradesh: Both the High Hills and Lower Hills divisions will experience a sustained four-day spell of Isolated rain and high-elevation snowfall from October 30 through November 2. Skies will clear up completely starting November 3.

Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh: Isolated precipitation is forecast across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh on October 30. While Ladakh will remain dry for the remainder of the week (Oct 31–Nov 5), Jammu and Kashmir divisions will see two additional brief spells of isolated rain/snow on November 1 and November 5, with dry intervals in between.

Severe Weather Warnings: Yellow Alert in Uttarakhand

While Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh carry "Nil" warnings (Green status) for the next five days, the IMD has sounded a Yellow Watch for both Garhwal and Kumaun regions of Uttarakhand:

Day 1 (Oct 30): Heavy rain and snow accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph (gusting up to 50 kmph) are likely at isolated places.

Day 2 (Oct 31): Thunderstorms and lightning remain likely at isolated places across both divisions before warnings subside on November 1.

Field Advisories: What Farmers, Orchardists, and Tourists Need to Know

1. Advisory for Farmers & Orchardists

Himachal Pradesh & J&K Apple Belts: While the four-day isolated wet spell in Himachal Pradesh (Oct 30–Nov 2) carries no severe weather warning, the moisture arrives at a critical window for temperate orchards entering post-harvest pre-dormancy. Light precipitation will help settle ambient dust, ease dry soil stress, and provide essential root-zone moisture ahead of winter chilling. However, growers in the lower and mid-hills should refrain from applying foliar sprays or whitewashing tree trunks until dry weather firmly sets in on November 3.

Uttarakhand Agrarian Belt: With gusty winds up to 50 kmph and heavy rain/snow warned for October 30, farmers in Garhwal and Kumaun should immediately secure harvested Kharif produce, tarpaulin-cover open grain stockpiles, and clear drainage channels in vegetable and Rabi sowing fields to prevent waterlogging.

Post-Spell Window: A clear, dry window across all four Himalayan states/UTs on November 3 and 4 will offer ideal conditions for pruning, basin management, and Rabi wheat/mustard field preparation.

2. Advisory for Tourists, Trekkers & Commuters

Uttarakhand High-Altitude Caution: Tourists and trekkers in Garhwal and Kumaun are strongly advised to suspend high-altitude treks, ridge crossings, and camping on October 30 and 31 due to the risk of sudden snowstorms, lightning strikes, and 50 kmph wind gusts.

Motorists along hill highways should remain vigilant for localized landslides, shooting stones, and slippery road stretches.

Himachal, Kashmir & Ladakh Travel: With no severe weather warnings in place for Himachal Pradesh, J&K, and Ladakh, general road travel and sightseeing remain safe.

However, travelers heading toward high mountain passes (such as Rohtang, Kunzum, Baralacha La, Zoji La, and Sinthan Top) should check morning road status updates, as isolated high-altitude snowfall through November 2 can cause temporary black ice and reduced visibility.
