Ram Mandir donation row sparks political storm in Himachal; Sukhu leads Congress march to Shimla temple
SHIMLA, JULY 7: The theft and financial irregularities linked to offerings and ornaments at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir under the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh triggered a fresh political confrontation in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, with Chief Minister leading the entire state Cabinet, Congress MLAs and party workers in a protest march to the historic Shri Ram Temple in Shimla.
Faith takes centre stage. Marching through Lower Bazaar, the Chief Minister, ministers, MLAs and state Congress president reached the temple where they offered prayers and participated in a havan, seeking the triumph of truth, justice and dharma. Congress workers also raised slogans against the BJP during the march.
Sukhu demands impartial probe. In a strongly worded statement, the Chief Minister expressed anguish over the alleged controversy surrounding offerings made by devotees at the Ayodhya temple.
He said it was unfortunate that those entrusted with safeguarding the sanctity of a sacred shrine and the faith of millions were facing serious allegations.
He asserted that instead of attempting to suppress the matter, an impartial and transparent investigation should be conducted to bring out the truth.
Trust bigger than wealth. Quoting the verse, "Ramo Vigrahavan Dharmah...", Sukhu said that no wealth is greater than the faith devotees repose in their deity and that betraying such faith amounts to the gravest form of adharma. He said he prayed for the protection of truth, justice and righteousness.
Election heat builds. The Congress move is being seen as an attempt to put the BJP on the defensive over an issue linked to the Ayodhya temple while projecting itself as a protector of public faith.
The development assumes political significance as Himachal Pradesh moves closer to the 2027 Assembly elections, with both major parties expected to sharpen their campaigns around issues carrying strong emotional and religious appeal.
