DA Case Against Sudhir Sharma Sparks BJP Fury; Jairam, Bindal Lead Massive Oakover Gherao

SHIMLA, AUGUST 5: The registration of a disproportionate-assets (DA) case against BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma by the Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Bureau triggered a major political showdown in Shimla on Wednesday, with the BJP accusing the Sukhu government of using investigative agencies for political vendetta.

Led by Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur and BJP State President Dr. Rajeev Bindal, thousands of BJP workers staged a massive protest, marched through Shimla and laid siege to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s official residence, Oakover.

Jairam Thakur alleged that the Congress government was misusing police, administration and investigative agencies to target BJP leaders and suppress dissent. He said the DA case against Sudhir Sharma was part of a broader pattern of registering “false cases” against political opponents.

Thakur claimed that the people had already rejected the Congress in recent Panchayat, District Council and urban local body elections and would deliver the “final verdict” in the Assembly elections.

He accused the government of weakening democratic institutions, restricting dissent and failing on development and welfare commitments. He also attacked the government over the law-and-order situation, citing recent criminal incidents in Shimla and Bilaspur.

Bindal announced that Wednesday’s protest was only the beginning of a statewide BJP campaign. He said the party would hold agitations every month in every Assembly constituency and Mandal, taking the government’s record directly to voters.

Bindal accused the Congress of betraying women, youth, farmers, employees and pensioners by failing to fulfil its election guarantees. He also criticised the closure of institutions and welfare schemes and alleged rising costs of essential commodities.

The BJP warned that the agitation would now spread across Himachal, with party workers reaching every Panchayat and booth.

The confrontation over the Sudhir Sharma DA case has  opened a fresh political front between the Sukhu government and the BJP, with the Opposition seeking to turn the Vigilance action into a wider campaign against alleged corruption, misuse of state machinery and political vendetta.
