Supreme Court Issues Notice to Centre on Gitanjali Wangchuk’s Plea Against Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention
Leh/New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Union government on a habeas corpus petition filed by activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).
The petition, filed through senior advocate Kapil Sibal, seeks Wangchuk’s immediate release, arguing that his preventive detention is illegal and unconstitutional. “We are against the detention,” Sibal told the bench, as quoted by Bar and Bench.
A division bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria has sought the government’s response on the plea. Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that the “grounds of detention have been supplied” to Wangchuk.
Wangchuk, a well-known climate activist and education reformer from Ladakh, has been under preventive detention amid ongoing protests in the Union Territory demanding constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule.
Meanwhile, the Apex Body Leh has decided to exclude all political parties — including the Congress — from the ongoing talks on the Ladakh agitation.
The move comes in the wake of violence and arson in Leh, which claimed the lives of four youths during the recent protests.
