Supreme Court Snubs Kangana Ranaut in Farmer’s Defamation Case. She is back to Bathinda to Face Case.
New Delhi, September 13 — BJP MP and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has suffered a legal blow after the Supreme Court refused to junk a defamation complaint filed against her by 73-year-old woman farmer Mahinder Kaur.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta made it clear that Kangana’s controversial post during the 2020–21 farmers’ protest was not a “mere retweet,” as claimed by her lawyers.
“You didn’t just forward it — you added spice to it,” the judges remarked while dismissing her plea.
The case stems from Kangana’s social media post in which she confused Mahinder Kaur with Bilkis Bano, the face of the Shaheen Bagh protests, and further suggested that such elderly women could be hired for protests for Rs 100.
The remark sparked outrage, leading Kaur to file a criminal defamation suit in Bathinda.
The incident had led to a slap episode at Airport where Ranaut was slapped by a woman police cop Daljeet Kaur avenging an insult she had heaped on woman farmer.
Kangana’s counsel argued that there was no intent to malign anyone and that she had clarified her stand later.
The apex court, however, said the question of interpretation would be decided only at trial, not at this stage. With that, the actor-MP had to withdraw her petition.
The defamation proceedings in the Bathinda court will now move forward, where Kangana will have to present her defence.
