Guwahati, May 4: The Election Commission of India trends for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections indicate a commanding lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party, putting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma firmly on course for a second term.
As per early trends across all 126 seats, the BJP is leading in a massive 79 seats, far ahead of its rivals. The Indian National Congress trails at 24 seats, struggling to keep pace in what is turning into a one-sided contest.
Among regional players, the Bodoland Peoples Front is ahead in 10 seats, while BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad is leading in 9 seats, further consolidating the NDA’s grip over the state. The All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal are marginal players so far, leading in just 2 seats each.
The numbers suggest a decisive mandate in favour of the ruling alliance, with the BJP not only maintaining but significantly expanding its political dominance in Assam.
Officials cautioned that these are trends based on counting updates from returning officers, and final results will be confirmed in Form-20.
If the trend holds, Sarma’s aggressive governance pitch and the BJP’s organisational strength appear to have paid off, leaving the opposition with little room to recover in the ongoing count.
