IIT Mandi Poster Row: Caste Hierarchy Display Sparks Outrage, Director orders probe.
SHIMLA/MANDI: A controversial Bhagavad Gita-themed poster displayed at IIT Mandi, stating that “Shudras should serve higher classes”, has kicked up a storm prompting its Director Laxmidhar Behera to order probe.
The poster, which has gone viral on social media, has triggered strong reactions in academic circles and among sections of society who see its language as a disturbing throwback to a feudal social order.
The controversy has acquired a wider social dimension because the message appeared at a premier institution of higher learning, where scientific temper, constitutional equality and social mobility are expected to be central to academic life.
The depiction of "Shudras" in a subordinate role has particularly hurt sentiments and raised questions about how such material was allowed to be displayed on the campus.
That historical legacy makes the IIT Mandi poster particularly jarring to many observers.
The contrast has therefore added another layer to the IIT Mandi controversy. While public discourse around social integration seeks to bridge historical divisions, a poster at a premier educational institution describing Shudras as being required to “serve higher classes” has revived precisely the kind of hierarchical imagery that social reform movements have sought to overcome.
Poster assigns traditional roles to four varnas
The poster, titled “Bhagavad Gita – The Timeless Wisdom”, reportedly states that Brahmins should “spread God’s message”, Kshatriyas should “protect society and spirituality”, Vaishyas should “drive the economy, support others”, and Shudras should “serve higher classes.”
Director orders inquiry and distances institute from display
IIT Mandi Director Laxmidhar Behera has condemned the poster and said that it was not endorsed by the institute in any manner. He said the material had been prepared as part of a student-led event and that he was shocked after learning about it.
An inquiry committee comprising faculty members and representatives from different social categories, including Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes, has been constituted to examine the matter.
“Some students have interpreted the Gita in some way. I have instituted an inquiry panel to look into it,” Behera told PTI, asserting that he and the institute stood against caste discrimination.
IIT Mandi’s stated values now under spotlight
The Director has stressed that the institute is committed to equality, social justice and scientific temper and to the principles enshrined in the Constitution. He has also said that occupational duties should be understood through guna and karma rather than caste.
Those assertions have assumed greater relevance following the controversy, as the institute now faces questions about the process through which the poster reached a public display space on the campus.
Viral poster turns campus episode into wider debate
The poster's viral circulation has taken the controversy well beyond IIT Mandi. The debate has increasingly centred on whether a contemporary institution devoted to science and technology can permit public material that appears to legitimise inherited social hierarchy.
