In a fitting tribute to one of Ladakh’s bravest sons, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh has announced that a memorial will be established in Leh to honour the legacy of Kargil war hero Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, who passed away recently.
In the icy heights where oxygen is scarce and danger constant, a young officer led from the front—charging into enemy fire to secure India’s frontlines during the Kargil War.
On May 30, 1999, then Major Sonam Wangchuk of the Ladakh Scouts spearheaded a daring mission under Operation Vijay.
Tasked with occupying a critical ridge line along the Line of Control at an altitude of over 5,500 metres, Wangchuk and his men moved into a glaciated battlefield—fully aware that delay would allow enemy forces to tighten their grip.
It was a race against time. The mission aimed to pre-empt infiltration and deny the enemy strategic dominance in the sector. What followed was nothing short of raw courage under fire.
Charging into hostile territory, Wangchuk not only led the assault but turned the tide of engagement.
From ambush to advantage, his unit neutralised enemy positions and recovered key war material, including heavy and universal machine guns along with ammunition and controlled stores—dealing a significant blow to enemy capability.
For his “indomitable courage, gallantry and exceptional leadership” in clearing the Chorbatla axis up to the LoC, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra—India’s second-highest wartime gallantry honour.
But beyond medals and citations lies a larger legacy. Wangchuk’s actions embody the ethos of the Indian Army—lead from the front, hold ground at all costs, and never yield an inch.
Today, as tributes pour in, the story of Colonel Sonam Wangchuk is not just a chapter from Kargil—it is a living reminder of the grit and sacrifice that guard the nation’s borders.
His “charge into fire” continues to inspire generations—etched forever in the icy winds of Batalik and the proud history of the Indian Army.
Leading the homage with a concrete step, the UT LG V Kumar Saxena said the memorial will be developed in consultation with the family, the Army, and local representatives. The proposed site in Leh is expected to stand as a lasting symbol of Ladakhi courage, sacrifice, and pride.
Colonel Wangchuk, a decorated officer of the Indian Army and a recipient of the prestigious Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), played a pivotal role during the Kargil War.
His leadership and battlefield courage earned him national acclaim and the enduring respect of his comrades and countrymen.
