The capital city of Shimla in Himachal pradesh has emerged as India's top front runner urban centre that provides top quality education for its residents and care for its poor and underprivileged and treats all genders equally as per the latest SPG index survey 2021-22 released today by the NITIAayog. 

Scoring 75.50  the queen of the hills has left all modern cities including the city beautiful Chandigarh, progressive cities of Kerala like its capital Thiruvanantpuram and Kochi behind. NITIAayog has set the sustainable Development goals (SDGs) on three indices of quality education, alleviation of poverty and gender equality  in the country for 2030.

Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu with 73 29 points came second while the city beautiful Chandigarh came third with 72.29 points and Thiruvanantpuram came fourth and Kochi ended at the fifth place scoring 72.29.

Panaji in Goa with 71.86 Pune with 71.21  Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu with 70 Ahmedabad (69.79)  Nagpur 69.79 figured among India’s top 20 front runner urban centres on SDG set by the joint IndoGerman cooperation mission.

Kohima in Sikkim, Guwahati in Assam and Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh are other  three capital cities in the mountain region  which figure among the performing urban centre scoring 58.07, 55.79 and 55.29 respectively in the NITIAayog survey.

As many as 58 urban centres participated in the SDGs index survey of the NITIAayog. 

Vice-chairman NITIAayog Dr Rajiv Kumar said the urban centres  are the engine of growth and development and survey data would put in place a robust SDGs monitoring system to achieve development in each state in the country by 2030.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has congratulated the stakeholders of the city for its achievements.
