Terrifying visuals have surfaced from Dharali and Kheer Ganga areas of Uttarkashi district, where a sudden surge in water levels wreaked havoc in the Dharali market zone early this morning.
The viral video shows a furious torrent ripping through the settlement, sweeping away multiple houses and shops in its path.
The exact toll is yet to be officially confirmed. However, what possibly averted a bigger tragedy was the alertness of a local video maker who can be heard in the footage frantically warning residents to flee their homes and shops just moments before the flash flood struck.
According to initial inputs from SDRF sources, teams from the police, Fire department, SDRF, and the Army have rushed to the spot and are engaged in rescue and relief operations amid difficult terrain and strong currents. Authorities are yet to confirm any casualties, but the scale of destruction suggests significant losses.
Dharali lies on the route to Gangotri and is home to many small shopkeepers and local families. The incident occurred following intense overnight rainfall in the higher reaches of Uttarkashi, leading to a sudden increase in the water discharge from nearby streams.
