SHIMLA, AUGUST 1, 2026: The Brave Son and Great Army General of India is no more. 

 Himachal joins nationa including Indian Army on Saturday  in  mourning  the demise of former Chief of the Army Staff General Vishwa Nath Sharma, PVSM, AVSM, ADC,

 Chief of Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth and all ranks expressed  profound grief and conveying heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and loved ones.

Paying tribute to the former Army Chief, General Dhiraj Seth said, “General Vishwa Nath Sharma was a distinguished soldier and visionary military leader who dedicated his life to the service of the Nation.

His exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment and enduring legacy of honour, duty and military excellence will continue to inspire future generations.”

Gen Vishwa Nath Sharma belonged to an illustrious military family and was the younger brother of Major Som Nath Sharma, PVC, Independent India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee.

By dedicating his own life to the service of the nation, Gen Sharma upheld his family’s extraordinary legacy of courage, sacrifice and selfless service with distinction.

A native of Dad village in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Gen Sharma served as Chief of the Indian Army from 1988 to 1990.

 His demise at the age of 97 has cast a pall of grief across Himachal Pradesh, with the state joining the nation and the armed forces fraternity in paying homage to one of its most distinguished sons.

Gen Sharma’s military career was marked by professional excellence, discipline and an unwavering commitment to national security.

His contribution to the Indian Armed Forces and his role in safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of the country have earned him a lasting place in India’s military history.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep sorrow over Gen Sharma’s demise and said, “General V.N. Sharma was an outstanding, visionary military leader and a true patriot who served the nation with indomitable courage, dedication and excellence.

 His invaluable contribution towards strengthening the Indian Armed Forces and safeguarding the sovereignty of the country will always be remembered with honour and gratitude.

He said Gen Sharma’s life of selfless service, discipline and unwavering devotion to duty would continue to inspire generations of officers and soldiers.
