NURPUR: Police District Nurpur has seized properties worth more than Rs 29.95 crore in 17 cases linked to the drug trade, marking a major crackdown on the financial base of narcotics traffickers in Himachal Pradesh. The seizures include houses, land, hotels, shops, vehicles and bank accounts allegedly acquired through illegal drug earnings.
The latest action alone involved properties worth around Rs 3.27 crore, prompting Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to commend Nurpur Police for targeting not just drug traffickers but their accumulated wealth.
The government has made seizure of illegally acquired assets a key part of its anti-drug campaign, with the focus shifting beyond arrests to breaking the financial infrastructure that sustains the narcotics network.
Sukhu said those who have built expensive houses, bought hotels and shops or accumulated vehicles through drug trafficking would now have to account for their illegal earnings. He said the wealth generated from drugs had been extracted at the cost of families whose children were pushed into addiction.
The Chief Minister said the government would not allow assets generated through narcotics trafficking to remain with criminals and has given police and other enforcement agencies full freedom to take stringent action.
He said strict implementation of the PIT-NDPS Act was being ensured against habitual offenders since the Congress government came to power, while drug networks have been mapped up to the panchayat level for sustained action.
“Every brick and every rupee earned through the drug trade belongs to the people of Himachal,” Sukhu said, stressing that the government’s objective was to dismantle the entire drug network rather than merely arrest individual peddlers.
“Himachal Pradesh is a Devbhoomi and no attempt to engulf the state into drug abuse and trafficking will be allowed to succeed,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the government would continue stringent action against every person involved in the drug trade and the network behind them.
