Shimla- Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today gave a clarion call to public and stakeholders to fight out the drug menace and its devastating impact on society with urgency.
Expressing deep concern over the growing number of young people ensnared by drugs, he emphasized the urgent need for action.
He gave this call on the occasion of the 'International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to all institutions, NGOs and society at large to take the drug menace head-on.
Chief Minister underscored the importance of sensitivity, vigilance, and awareness in combatting the menace of drugs.
He highlighted the necessity of putting in place a strong infrastructure to effectively treat and rehabilitate individuals trapped in the grip of addiction.
Of particular concern to the Chief Minister was the alarming sale of drugs near educational institutions, leading to the addiction of vulnerable youth.
In just six months, Shimla district alone witnessed 400 cases and over 300 arrests related to drug trafficking, he informed.
To address this issue, the government has joined forces with the police department and devised a comprehensive plan to fight against drugs, CM said.
They have also sent a resolution to the Union Government, urging stricter actions against drug peddlers by amending the Narcotics Act.
He said the government us setting up the two drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centers in the state.
Sukhu said the 50 bighas near Shimla has already been identified for a center here and funds allocated for both projects.
Chief Minister appealed for public cooperation in eradicating the drug menace from society, urging citizens to promptly report information about drug peddlers to the police for swift action.
He stressed the crucial role of NGOs and announced plans to organize a Gram Sabha to engage all sections of society in the campaign against drug addiction.
Chief Minister recognized and honored NGOs, Deputy Commissioners and officials from various departments for their efforts at combating drug menace in their respective districts.
NGOs, including Gunjan Sanstha Dharamshala, Manav Kalyan Samiti Chopal, and the District Red Cross Society Kullu were also acknowledged for their commendable work in the field of drug de-addiction.
In a show of solidarity, all attendees took an oath to prevent drug abuse.
Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil underscored the need for widespread awareness among population.
He said drug abuse not only affects individuals but also impacts entire families and call for an open communication between parents and children as a preventive measure and for collective efforts from all sections of society to tackle the drug menace.
