KULLU/MANALI: In a display of 'prowess,' the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Kullu was caught on camera in a rather intoxicated state, driving his official vehicle through the bustling tourist town.
The video, which has since gone viral faster than you can say "hitting the bottle," shows the SDM in a less-than-ideal condition, refusing to even step out of his car after being confronted by a local resident.
The scene unfolded when the resident noticed a rather sizable damage to his vehicle, which the SDM’s car had apparently hit.
As the resident demanded the SDM get out of the car and face the damage, the man in the driver's seat, in a stupor of his own, merely gestured wildly instead of addressing the issue.
The real comedy, however, came from the other passenger in the official car, who, perhaps more preoccupied with the SDM’s antics, opted for a quiet and tactful approach — by saying absolutely nothing.
As the video spread across social media like wildfire, the floodgates of criticism opened.
Locals and netizens alike blasted the SDM for his utter disregard for his responsibilities, all while Manali's streets were flooded with tourists and his inebriated performance set a new low for local administration.
“A masterclass in how NOT to be an administrator,” one user commented, while another asked, “Who needs tourists when you’ve got this kind of entertainment on the streets?”
With the backlash growing louder by the minute, locals have now demanded strict action against the SDM, with some even suggesting a breathalyzer test as a mandatory part of his next administrative duties.
"What happens when the man meant to enforce law and order is the one needing it?" asked another Twitter user.
"Drunken Driving — Official Style." Whether this will lead to an inquiry or just another round of high-flying bureaucratic theatrics remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Kullu -Manali has a new ‘attraction,’ and it’s not the mountains.
Reacting to the video SDM claimed video is an attempt to tarnish his image as they had carried out a demolition drive in the Kasol few days ago. These are the same people who were hit by the administrative action. We did not damage any vehicle and if we would pay the damage. We have lodged police complaint and everything will be out, he told the media.
