Himachal to Introduce Common Cadre for Medical College Faculty

Shimla, February 2 – The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to introduce a common cadre for faculty appointments across all government medical colleges and super-specialty institutions in the state.

Currently, faculty members are appointed under a college-specific cadre, leading to administrative challenges, inconsistencies in service conditions, and acute faculty shortages—especially in newly established medical colleges.

To address these issues, the government will create a unified recruitment system for faculty. This will allow for smooth inter-institutional transfers, standardized career progression, and a transparent framework for faculty management.

The move aims to streamline recruitment, training, and promotions, ensuring that medical educators have equal career opportunities. It will also help allocate faculty resources more efficiently, preventing shortages in certain institutions.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the decision would strengthen medical education and improve healthcare delivery across the state. He emphasized that the common cadre system would eliminate disparities, create a merit-based promotion system, and ultimately enhance patient care.
