SHIMLA:  In a major step to combat contraband Drugs, the Crime Branch of Himachal State CID today has filed a charge-sheet against eight  persons, accused of involvement in smuggling psychotropic substances across state borders.

This case, led by the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) unit stationed in Kangra, began with the interception of a vehicle near Shivbaadi Mandir, Gagret, on September 14, 2023.

The vehicle, bearing registration number HP36B-8124, was found to contain over 50,000 capsules and tablets of psychotropic substances, particularly Tramadol Hydrochloride.

The investigation, initially carried out by local police, was taken over by the State CID team after September 26, 2023.

Led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr. Shakti Singh, the CID team uncovered the intricate network of the smuggling operation.

The gang, operating across Himachal Pradesh and neighboring states, utilized fake invoices from genuine medical stores to disguise their illicit activities.

The consignments, purportedly containing medical supplies like surgical masks and sanitizers, actually harbored psychotropic substances.

The mastermind behind this operation was identified as Verender Kumar alias Bindu, a resident of Gagret, Tehsil Ghanaari, in  Una.

Financial investigations revealed the extent of his involvement, with 82 immovable properties, 5 vehicles, and 25 bank accounts linked to him and his family members.

The Competent authority has confirmed the freezing of illegally acquired immovable properties, Vehicles & Bank Accounts with  cumulative value of these assets amounts to Rs. 10.12 Crore,  the DGP stated. 

Director General of Police CID, Himachal Pradesh said they recognised the gravity of the situation and assured continued efforts in investigating the remaining gang members and associated aspects of the case under section 173 (8) Cr.PC.

This chargesheets would go a long stride in the fight against drug trafficking, restore public faith in law enforcement agencies to maintain the integrity and safety of the people, mainly young impressionable youth of the state
