MANDI, 26th July 2024: IIT Mandi, in collaboration with IIT Ropar and IIT Guwahati, hosted an international conference to celebrate 60 years of Density Functional Theory (DFT) from 21st to 26th July 2024.
The event, organized by the School of Physical Sciences, marked a significant milestone in quantum mechanical modeling.
DFT has been instrumental in advancing theoretical and computational chemistry and physics, offering deep insights into the electronic structure of various materials.
The conference highlighted the latest advancements and applications of DFT.
Prof. Arti Kashyap, the conference convener, noted the event's unique two-part structure.
The first part focused on the fundamentals of DFT and its current status, including the impact of machine learning on materials physics.
The second part featured research presentations from faculty across different institutes, with around 100 students showcasing their work through posters.
The conference covered a wide range of topics such as machine learning for materials science, topology in quantum materials, exotic quantum effects, spin-orbit phenomena, and magnetism in 2D materials.
Special lectures and workshops introduced students to complex methods used in DFT, demonstrating their applications in understanding material properties.
The event was a major success, fostering learning and collaboration among the DFT scientific community and cementing IIT Mandi's role as a leader in scientific research and education.
