IMD Warns of Flash Flood Risk in Himachal Pradesh. But the water sheds in most parts of the state are not saturated..
Shimla, July 4, 2024: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Himachal Pradesh, cautioning residents and local authorities about potential flooding in the next 24 hours.
The advisory, released by the IMD's Hydromet Division at 11:30 IST, highlights a low to moderate risk of flash floods in specific regions of the state.
According to the bulletin, districts including Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla are at risk of flash flooding due to anticipated rainfall.
The IMD has identified several watersheds and nearby areas in these districts where surface runoff and inundation are likely, especially in regions with fully saturated soils and low-lying areas.
The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) and residents living near rivers and streams have been alerted to prepare for potential flash floods.
The IMD has emphasized the need for caution and readiness to respond to sudden flood conditions that could arise from the expected rainfall.
Authorities are urging people to avoid crossing rivers and nallas (seasonal streams) and to stay informed about local weather updates. The alert is in place until 11:30 IST on July 5, 2024.
