Mandi – The revered deity Kamru Nag has commenced his sacred journey from his abode to the temple town of Mandi, marking the onset of the week-long Mandi Mahashivratri festival.
The festivities began with a vibrant procession led by Madho Rai, the presiding deity, to the historic Bhootnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Mahakaal.
The rhythmic beats of drums resonated through the town as 'bajantris' (traditional musicians) heralded the arrival of deities descending from the erstwhile Mandi state. Kamru Nag is set to reside at the Tarna Temple for the next six days, overseeing the celebrations.
The Mandi Mahashivratri festival, renowned for its rich history and cultural significance, dates back to 1526 AD. It was during this time that Raja Ajbar Sen, the then ruler of Mandi, established the Bhootnath Temple at the heart of the town.
Legend narrates that a cow mysteriously offered milk to a particular stone in the forest, leading the king to discover a Shiva Linga beneath it.
This divine revelation prompted the construction of the temple and the initiation of the Mahashivratri festival.
Over the centuries, the festival has evolved, with Raja Suraj Sen in 1705 AD introducing the present form of cultural celebrations.
Traditionally, the festival commences with processions, locally known as 'jaleb,' where deities from various villages are carried in ornately decorated palanquins to Mandi.
These processions begin at the Bhootnath Temple, led by Madho Rai, and are accompanied by 'gurs' (oracle priests) and 'pujaris' (priests).
The deities, adorned in glittering embroidered drapery, first pay homage to Madho Rai before proceeding to the royal palace in a grand procession to honor the ruler, considered the regent of Madho Rai.
The week-long fair is a confluence of devotion, music, dance, and traditional rituals, reflecting the town's epithet as "Chhoti Kashi" due to its spiritual ambiance.
This year, the festival is slated to run from February 27 to March 5, 2025. Hundreds of devtas will participate in the festival.
The Chief Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the festivities tomorrow, adding to the grandeur of the event.
The Mandi Mahashivratri festival continues to be a testament to the town's enduring devotion and vibrant cultural heritage, drawing devotees and tourists from across the globe.
