Shimla, April 3: The India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather alert for Himachal Pradesh, warning of hailstorms, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several districts from April 3 to April 7, putting both farmers and tourists on alert. 

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected at most places on April 3 and 4, while intermittent wet spells will continue till April 9. A fresh Western Disturbance from April 7 is likely to intensify weather activity across the state. 

⚠️ Hailstorm, winds up to 60 kmph

The department has warned that hailstorms and thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty winds of 50–60 kmph are likely at isolated places on April 3 and 4, especially in districts like Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra and Chamba. 

From April 5 onwards, thunderstorm activity will continue with slightly lower wind speeds of 30–50 kmph, but conditions may worsen again around April 7–8 due to the incoming western disturbance. 

High-altitude districts like Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti may also experience strong sustained winds (50–60 kmph) in the initial phase of the forecast period. 

🌧️ Rain and snowfall pattern

April 3–4: Widespread rain in low and mid hills; rain/snow in higher reaches

April 5–6: Light rain/snow at isolated to few places

April 7–8: Rain/snow activity increases again at many places

April 9: Weather likely to ease slightly with scattered precipitation 

Temperatures are also expected to drop by 4–6°C over the next few days, bringing a noticeable chill back to the hills. 

🌾 Farmers warned of crop damage

The advisory specifically flags risk to orchards and standing crops, with hailstorms capable of damaging apple blossoms and other horticulture produce. Farmers have been advised to:

Use hail nets or protective caps in orchards

Secure loose farm structures

Stay updated with local advisories 

🚗 Tourists, travellers advised caution

With reduced visibility, slippery roads and risk of falling debris, tourists heading to hill stations like Shimla, Manali and Kullu Valley have been urged to exercise caution.

Authorities warn of:

Possible road accidents due to skidding

Disruptions from falling trees or power lines

Sudden weather changes in high-altitude areas 

People are advised to avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from water bodies, and unplug electrical appliances during storms.
