NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for advanced research and innovative solutions in meteorology, urging scientists and research institutions to develop systems capable of providing early warnings for natural disasters like earthquakes.

Addressing the 150th foundation day of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), he lauded its role in disaster management and India's growing stature as a global leader in meteorological advancements.

"The more accurate the Meteorological Department's forecasts become, the greater their importance in everyday life and industries," PM Modi stated.

He highlighted the increasing demand for IMD's data across sectors and emphasized its critical role in ensuring public safety and boosting economic resilience.

Recalling past disasters, PM Modi praised India's progress in minimizing the impact of cyclones and other calamities.

"Today, we have turned what was once considered destiny into a story of preparedness and resilience," he said, attributing much of this success to IMD's advancements.

PM Modi also drew attention to India's contribution to global disaster management through initiatives like the Flash Flood Guidance System, which aids neighboring countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

"India is now the first responder in times of crisis, enhancing the world's confidence in us," he remarked, calling this a testament to the nation's scientific prowess.

Urging a fusion of traditional knowledge with modern science, the Prime Minister cited ancient Indian texts like Krishi Parashar and Brihat Samhita, which documented meteorological insights centuries ago.

"Our sages studied weather patterns and planetary positions with remarkable precision, long before modern machinery," he said.

PM Modi encouraged IMD to align its efforts with future challenges and global needs. "India will continue to serve and safeguard the world, playing a a leading role in addressing climate challenges and enhancing disaster readiness," he asserted, reinforcing India's commitment to a sustainable and secure future.
